Marilyn Monroe Drawing

This drawing is something I'm selling on Etsy so I thought I would show here some of the stages that built up to this finished drawing.

This process can be seen in more detail on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE1vEOcMMos&feature=c4-overview&list=UUfp5V4Oj3SKjJHTPnfC2pcw

Volunteering for Charities

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for me is an intense time of charity work. On a Wednesday I'm at British Red Cross helping in the charity shop. On a Thursday I'm at Asha helping with the art therapy, and then on Friday I'm back to Red Cross.

So, at British Red Cross I do a bit of everything from working on the tills, sorting, pricing up and putting things out. But recently I have been working on one particular project on my own. I've been sorting the summer stuff ready for April! It's not the most exciting thing in the world and I get surprisingly tired but when I start myself a little project, I have to finish it myself to feel satisfied.

This is the room I was sorting FROM at the start of the day.

This was the room I was sorting INTO at the start of the day (I had already been doing it previously, as you can tell).

So basically, I was sorting the bags from one room which were mixed items of clothing; ladies tops, ladies bottoms, men's tops, men's bottoms, children's etc. into the other room and putting all of the same items of clothing together and stacking them against the wall so that when the items are needed someone can easily go upstairs and grab a bag labeled 'ladies tops' (or whatever). I am just so helpful, you see?

This was the room I was sorting FROM a few hours later (it doesn't look much different but it is!).

This was the room I was sorting INTO a few hours later (I wish these photos really showed how much I did).

So that's what I'm currently doing at Red Cross (which doesn't sound interesting at all but it is alright!).

At Asha I'm doing some very different things by helping the women with their art. They are currently doing a project about designing whatever they want. A really good project to allow them all to do what they want and really express themselves through it. It has taken a few of them a while to come up with a subject matter to start designing. When they get going with a design though, it is amazing what they come up with. Things from dress designing, shoe designing, and then more art based projects with boxed collections and 'family' themed photography. However, I always start things (like volunteering at Asha) and want to give my all to it. I have so many ideas for things when I get started and it's something that I have to try and hold myself back from getting too involved. Especially when I have to think about the fact I already volunteer at these two charities, I now have a job starting next week and I have too online shops to run, as well as having a social life!

Anyway, my point is that this voluntary work has been amazing experience so far and my confidence has grown hugely. I would recommend volunteering to anyone. It's so rewarding to put your all into something with no judging because, at the end of the day, you are volunteering for the charity so you say how far you want to go.

When lying in bed on my laptop I look up and hanging on my wardrobe doors are my advent calenders (I have two). Yes, January 30th and my advent calenders are still not finished. I still have six chocolates to eat from each so I think I may have those now.

DIY: Pen or Make-Up Brushes Pot

Here's the first of (hopefully) many DIY blog posts that I will be doing. I'm starting with an extremely simple one. It's a cute pen or make-up brush holder which can be customised to will be the proud owner of it!

All you need for this DIY is:

  • Some fabric of your preferred colour and pattern choice
  • Fabric scissors
  • Double sided sticky tape
  • A washed and clean tin

First of all take your tin and ensure it is clean as you don't want any bean juice or left-over soup in there!

When it is fully clean you can cover it in double sided sticky tape! Everywhere to ensure the fabric sticks well.

And then all that's left to do is cut the fabric a centimetre more than you need on all four sides to all yourself to easily fold those in and hide the frayed edges.

This is what you should end up with! And of course you can put whatever colour(/color) or fabric that you so wish to suit your fancy!

I hope you like the DIY post. I hope to be doing more similar DIY posts soon!

Should you go to University or not?

You've nearly finished your a-levels, work involving coursework and exams seems to be taking over your life - stress overload. It doesn't exactly make the idea of university sound tempting.

But university is more than just work, it's moving out for the first time, fending for yourself, meeting new people, spending a lot of money etc. It's a huge step.

I went through all the motions of thinking about what I wanted to do (art), deciding where I wanted to go (which for art meant doing a foundation course first), applying to the universities, getting in and then realising that it wasn't what I wanted to do. Maybe it was right that I went through all the stress of applying before I decided it wasn't right, but it did seem like an awful waste of time and stress meeting deadlines to then decide to not go at all. It took me a while to realise that rushing into going to university perhaps wasn't the right choice for me - it wasn't until I was talking to someone about how much I was struggling with concentrating on working for my a-levels (which is unusual for me as I always get my work done on time and I loved the subjects I was doing) that they told me that perhaps I was struggling because I was working towards something I didn't want to do and subconsciously I was trying to resist doing this. So I then decided I wasn't going. Or at least not in the foreseeable future.

I thought about it and justified it to myself like this; so I would go to university and get a degree in Fine Art. Then where would I be? I'd have this extra few words on my CV saying that I have a degree but that doesn't guarantee me my ideal job. And what do I even want to be my ideal job? A degree in Fine Art might not get me there anyway, despite my love for the subject.

So I haven't gone to university and I've started my adventure into the big wide world. Sounds scary but it's not at all because I've taken it slowly (very slowly). I have been lucky to have a lot of support from my family. They were a little disappointed that I wasn't going to university but they understood the reasons why I wasn't and supported that (with me telling them that I may go at some point in the future...). I knew I needed to get a job and was handing my CV out everywhere I could whilst also applying online and having little success. This made me think that it was important to build up my CV before I would be able to get myself a job. To do this I applied to do some charity work.

The charities I applied to work for were British Red Cross, in a charity shop, and for Asha Women's centre, helping with the art therapy there. I only starting volunteering for these charities in about September 2013 but I have learnt so much in absolutely no time. Not only have I been helping other people in a number of ways I have also noticed a huge change in myself. I have learnt so much about both of the charities and my contribution to them; working on the shop floor, in the sorting room, steaming clothing etc. at Red Cross and, understanding women I would never have met before, how to help them with art, teaching them techniques with art (using a gentle and relaxed approach in my teaching), learning to listen etc. at Asha Women's centre. As well as these things, I am having to work with the public all the time and my confidence has grown because of it which was something I really needed help with. I have also met numerous people through my charity work who are to important and valuable to me and my future.

As well as the charity work that I started last year, I passed my driving test last December and have recently managed to get a job. Both of these things are huge hurdles for me and are just adding to my confidence (without letting my head grow too much).

So what point am I trying to make whilst I ramble on about what I've been doing and the success I've had so far? Well, I'm trying to show that if I had gone to university I would never have experienced these things (at least for now) and the life experiences that I have already gained in less than 5 months means so much more to me. I would have gone to university as a bundle of stress and probably hit a wall and not reached my potential there anyway. If I decide to go in the future I will have at least been able to clear my head, be able to think sensibly and clearly and actually be able to go with a good idea of how I plan to come out the other side with a goal in life of what I want to do.

Basically, if you have any doubts about university then don't rush into it; it's not for everyone and it's not necessarily the right thing for everyone to go into straight out of school. Whatever you do, don't rush into it and don't let anyone else push you into something you don't want to do. They're not living your life, you are and you need to be happy with what you are doing.

Bye for now!

Please comment with any other points of view that you have on the matter, thanks!

New Job!

Today has already been a great day for me as I've managed to get myself a new job. It's been a complicated time getting to this point though! Back in about September I applied for a job with White Stuff and I went through the interviews etc. and actually managed to get the job. It was over Christmas though and it turns out I was going on holiday skiing at the same time... The consequence being that I couldn't have the job. This wasn't great. The holiday wasn't great.

However, the other week I got an email from the manager of White Stuff telling me she had a vacancy for a 12 hour contract and cutting a long story short; I've got the job! I'm so happy about this. I'm waiting for the rota to be sent to me tomorrow or Wednesday. Yippee!

So I've still got free time to continue with my Etsy shop.

Speaking of which...

I've been uploading a lot more items to my 'Where to Buy Vintage' shop:

And I've been uploading some handmade cushion covers that I've been slaving over for the last few days to my 'Shed Creativity' shop:

Check them out and tell me what you think!

I hope you've all been busy lately and have been having a day as good as mine.

London Charity Shop Buys

I'm knackered. I don't think I've stopped doing stuff involving hard work in days. It's really draining my energy. Not that I want much sympathy... LOL.

So anyway, I promised I'd show the things I bought in some of London's charity shops last weekend. I'm actually only going to show four of my favourite items (very exciting, I know). These charity shops were in Pimlico and I would recommend them. The day before we went to Camden and when walking from Camden to Mornington Crescent tube station you pass many charity shops. I love these ones but just didn't happen to buy anything in them this time. However, I have never been to the Pimlico charity shops and we did them by walking from Pimlico tube station to Victoria station, you could definitely see the prices increase as you got closer to Victoria. The prices were also, on average, much higher than those in Camden.

Anyway, enough rambling...

This was the first thing I bought. It's only H&M, so nothing special, but I thought it was a really nice top that can be warn smart or casual and I like things that have this flexibility because it allows me to be lazier. Not that I'm lazy...

This was the next item I got. It's DKNY and although it's very simple looking, I think it will be really good for matching with so many different things. If I were to wear it smart I could wear a shirt underneath or something, and then to wear it casual it just needs a cute cardigan, some casual jewelry and some casual shoes and it will immediately look less dressy.

I love this dress. I have no idea what make it is because it doesn't have any labels in it. When I put it on it fits in all the right places to look very flattering. I know it doesn't look that flattering just on the hanger but it looks so nice on and (I'm not sure whether you can see) but the little specs of gold in it mean I can wear it casually or for a party. (so many multi-use clothing items here!)

Finally is one for the summer. I know it's black but it is quite a thin material and has that summer shape about it. Although I reckon I need to lose a bit of my winter warmth (weight) first for it to fit just right.

Hope you like my buys!

A Few Money Saving Ideas...

I was thinking about blog posts I wanted to write and as I've been writing lists and making notes (which I love doing) coming up with ideas, I thought how popular it has become for people to learn about saving money and how to do it.

Now I'm not saying that I'm any kind of genius with saving money but I do find myself naturally being one of those people that does as many things possible to save money (whilst enjoying myself) and I blame my father for this. He is one of the worst for saving money... And then never spending it. I'm not quite that bad. Anyway, I thought I'd put together a list of ways that I save money so other people can use the ideas as well.

1. Look after the pennies...
A well known phrase 'look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves', and it's true! Since I was tiny I have always saved my pennies in a money box and when it gets heavy I count them out into money bags and take them to the bank. It's only a few pounds at a time but the pounds add up. The great thing about it is that many people really don't like coppers filling up their purse/wallet so they give theirs to me as well! Doing them a favour but also benefiting me.

2. ...The pounds can't completely look after themselves
Going one step further with looking after the pennies, I have recently taken to saving pounds (what's the point in having change in your purse/wallet at all?). I haven't saved all of the pound coins in my purse, although that could be another step further if you really need to save the money. I made myself a big money box to save this money and on the back I drew 52 boxes with the date of the first day of each week in them. Every week I add a pound to the box and tick of that week so I can keep on top of how much I have put in there. The great thing about it is £1 a week isn't really missed so it doesn't hurt too much but it adds up! I am doing this with my boyfriend though so each week we both put a pound into the box and by the end of the year we should have £104 to treat ourselves with. Whether you do it alone and make £52 or with someone else and make £104, make sure you put the saving of that money to good use and treat yourself!

3. Money saving vouchers
Keep all those money saving vouchers that you get given free in magazines/newspapers/shops etc. but don't be tricked by them! If you know that a voucher will help contribute to reducing the cost of something you frequently buy or need to buy but can't afford it without the voucher then go ahead and make the most of it. But, if you don't use or want what the voucher is offering and are just thinking of buying it because it's a good deal then just don't go there. The retailers know that this is what people do and use it as a way of making people buy things they would never have bought in the first place. If you need it or really want it then make the most of that voucher, otherwise just throw it away and forget about it. It's not saving you money when it's making you buy things you don't need!

4. Do It Yourself (DIY)
Whether it's decorating/re-decorating, or it's cooking rather than having a takeaway or meal out, or if it's cleaning the house rather than getting someone in to do it, everything adds up and saves money. I understand that a lot of these things are easier for some people to do than others because of having full time jobs etc. but for the most part I'm sure you can find ways around these things. If you spend very little time in the house then there is no need for it to be cleaned until you are home sometime? If you have kids and don't have time for cooking yourself then why not make a rota for everyone cooking different meals each night? Not only will it save you money but it will teach everyone to cook and be much healthier!

5. Compare prices
If you find a product you like don't jump into buying it straightaway, look it up online and compare the same product in different shops to see if you can get it cheaper. Most of the time you will probably find the exact same product, with no difference in quality, a lot cheaper (in some cases, depending on the product, it could be up to £50-100 cheaper!). If you want to go one step further and aren't that bothered about the brand of the product you're buying then you could find a product you like and then look for a completely different branded product which has similar qualities but a much smaller price tag. For example, an iPad is great for many things but costs in excess of £300, however, you could look for a tablet made by another lesser known brand and buy it for about £100. That's a big saving!

6. Have a clear out
I'm sure everyone can admit to keeping things that they don't need whether it's something with a memory attached (take a photo of it and get rid of that clutter!), or whether it's too many clothes you've bought and never warn, or all those presents you've been given but never actually wanted; sort them out and clear them out! You could take them to a charity shop/thrift store but we're thinking of ways to make/save money so why not go to a car boot or table top sale and pass on your loved things for other people to love and cherish too? Not only will this clear your house out, it will also make you a bit of extra pocket money to spend! Yippee!

7. Start shopping in charity shops (thrift store in USA)
Now I am not only a huge charity shopper, I have gone one step further and I now volunteer in a charity shop to ensure I can buy all the best things. It's become quite an addiction. The best thing about it is you can get some amazing quality branded items for pennies. I think the products seem so much more worth it when you can wear them as many times as something you'd buy new but be able to claim to a cheap price tag with it! Sometimes you can even get some amazing items which are still brand new with tags for the same cheap prices.

8. Do you really need it?
When you're shopping and fancy buying something just ask yourself, do you really need it? If it's clothing then, what will it go with that you already own? Will you actually wear it or use it? If the answer to most of these questions is no then just leave it. I ask myself this all the time (unless I'm in the mood for treating myself). Having said that, I can sometimes take it too far and end up just not buying anything.

9. Use your legs
Finally on my list is to make the most of your legs and walk more places (or use your push bike). This is obviously only something that can be done when you aren't travelling far but, it saves money on using a car/public transport and you will also be getting exercise. If you're travelling somewhere too far to walk then why not share transport with someone else and therefore share the cost of travelling? Everyone has become very lazy and seem to have forgotten about their legs (I am one of those people but in the summer I definitely seem to find my legs).

Obviously these are just a few of my own ideas and I am no expert on life.
If anyone has any other ideas then please share them. I'm always interested to hear other ways of saving or making money.

Bye for now!

London Underground Drama

Will the life of a blogger suit me? Probably not. I am certainly the type to forget about these things but here's to giving it a try!

I'll tell you about my weekend whilst I'm here. I spent my weekend in London with my aunt and mother. Whilst in London we attempted to fit in as much shopping as possible over the two and a half days of being there, and I think we did our hardest to. On the Sunday my aunt was meeting with someone she knew and my mother and I thought we would take this opportunity to fit in more time for shopping so we headed over to Camden. The best way to get around London is, of course, by the London underground and when we got to Camden we went to get up and get off the tube when my mother and I realised we were attached (my scarf stuck to her handbag) in a panic of needing to get of the tube in time before the doors shut we adopted an awkward crab-style shuffle off the train with me going backwards, "Mind the Gap" (my mum described this as ballroom dancing but it was certainly not that elegant!). All I can say is that I hope CCTV enjoyed that.

I'll leave you with another funny incident... Whilst sitting on the tube waiting to leave a station the driver pipes up.. "This is the driver speaking, can the man with the push bike not get onto this train, it doesn't take push bikes".. *pause*.. "man with bike, please get off the train".. *pause*.. "this is the driver speaking, I will not move the train until the man with the bike gets off"..*pause*.. "Thank you, we may now depart the station."

Anyway, as mentioned, I have done a lot of charity shopping and I hope to be showing photo evidence of this at some point so watch this space!

Whilst you wait for my next blog please check out my two separate Etsy shops.
